i don't understand how you're supposed to beat old one's army (2024)

Is there something I'm missing or am I just bad?

Spawning Conditions: You need a flat area with at maximum 120 blocks on both sides (this is too long in my opinion, do 100 you can get back n forth much faster), the floor must be solid tiles but you can have platforms above to form an arena (useful for Betsy)

Gameplay: For starters get an Old One's Army sentry, this event is extremely difficult without one, the best one I recommend is explosive trap, when placed near the portals it can even hit wyverns before they get too far into the air making it extremely easy to do this event. I focus one side first, usually once you place 7 you can focus sentries on the other side and after 7 on that side you can place the rest in the middle (if you're on tier 3, otherwise add up on the other sides). Use a weapon that can pierce multiple enemies, considering you're post Moon Lord then Phantasm, S.D.M.G. or Celebration MK2 with Luminite bullets/arrows or Nuke I will work out for you. There are other methods to the fight such as using hoiks if you're into cheesing

The Old Ones Army is my favorite event and I do it almost every play through. Here’s some of my tier 3 tips (for melee, ranged, and Magic, just in case anyone else comes to this thread for help)…

1. Make sure you are using the tier 3 OoA sentry that corresponds with your class. I would recommend Balista over Lightning Aura for melee.
2. Make sure you are using OoA armor sold by the Tavernkeep. It greatly boosts the damage of you sentries which is extremely important. The Post-Golem armor is your best option but the Post-Mech armor also works. (Don’t use endgame armor crafted with Luminite)
3. Your arena should be completely flat and 245 tiles wide with the Crystal Stand in the center. Use asphalt block for floor and place a layer of platforms 20 blocks above the ground. Also, place campfires, heart lanterns, star bottles, bast statues (if you can get some), and OoA enemy banners if you have any.
4. Make sure you are buffing up with all the applicable potions and your classes buffing station (sharpening station, ammo box, or crystal ball).
5. For melee I would recommend the Flairon during waves 1-6 and the North Pole during phase 7. The North Pole will take care of the smaller enemies will also damaging Betsy. (Use the Solar Eruption or Meowmere in the late game.)
6. For ranged I would recommend the Elf Melter or the Eventide for waves 1-6 and the Tsunami for wave 7. The Elf Melter does extra damage to enemies that come into contact with the Explosive Traps (when you have Ranged OoA armor equipped). (Use the Celebration MK2 in the late game.)
7. For magic I would recommend the Razorblade Typhoon or the Charged Blast Cannon. Also use the Golden Shower for the Ichor sebuff. (Use the Nebula Blaze, Nebula Arcanum, or Last Prism in the late game.)
8. If you’re not doing a pure class playthrough use the Clinger Staff, Nimbus Rod, Rainbow Gun, a strong minion, and a non OoA sentry. The Clinger Staff specifically can be used to almost completely block off one portal.
9. Don’t use any wings or master ninja gear (at least for the first 6 waves). Vertical movement and quick dodging aren’t very important. Horizontal movement is important so equip a pair of Lightning Boots or their upgrades. Alternatively you can use a mount like the Unicorn or Wolf to get an extra accessory slot.
10. You can equip wings and master ninja gear right before the 7th wave. I personally don’t do this but they might help you avoid Betsy’s attacks.
11. If you’re playing melee place your Ballista sentries near the Crystal. If you’re using Lightning Aura sentries place them evenly across the arena.
12. If you’re playing ranged cluster your explosive traps near each portal. Make sure you place one trap at the Crystal just in case and pay extra attention to the flying enemies.
13. If you’re playing magic cluster most of your Flameburst Sentries near the Crystal. You’ll also want to place some Flameburst Sentries in between the Portal and Crystal on the platform above. These will help take care of the flying enemies that the Sentries at the Crystal can’t reach.
14. Try to wrap up the the 6th wave as quickly as possible. You’ll need as much time as possible to place sentries and prepare for Betsy.
15. Treat Betsy similiary to Duke Fishron. Always be on the move and keep your distance. Just don’t leave the arena, she targets the Crystal not you the player.
16. Learning Betsy’s attacks and how to manage your sentries will take a few attempts. It’s a hard fight but you eventually get the hang of it.
